Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

By four different approaches it is planned to investigate the prevalence and transmission of the SBV. In a first step the time of introduction of SBV into the population will be estimated by investigating frozen serum samples taken in 2010 and 2011 from 15 sheep and goats flocks where lambs were born with the Arthrogryposis-Hydranencephaly-Syndrom (AHS) in the lambing season 2011/2012. A prevalence study in the spring and early summer of 2012 should reveal the flock prevalence and the intra flock prevalence of antibodies against SBV. By a short interview in about 75 sheep and goat flocks the losses and malformations in lambs and secondara losses will be evaluated. This study should also reveal information about the vulnerable phase of pregnancy for induction of AHS during SBV infections. Parallel to a study in cattle and sheep performed by the FLI and different federal states it is planned to perform a case control study in goat flocks in cooperation with the FLI and with the local veterinary officers. The case control study should reveal risk factors as well as protective factors for SBV infections in goat flocks. A consecutive monitoring in two SBV positive flocks in 2012 should give information about the persistence of SBV antibodies and the propagation of the SBV infection within these positive flocks. The monitoring of 10 SBV negative sheep and goat flocks should give close information about the progression of the SBV infections in 2012.
