Automatic visual recognition of individuals in livestock (ANIMET)
Project
Project code: 17N2009
Contract period: 01.06.2009
- 31.12.2012
Budget: 238,184 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Compared to other biometric identification methods, automatic face detection does not require the user's aid. Today face recognition methods are deployed in airports, large concerns and public places to identify persons based on images and contribute to the security. Nevertheless different lighting situations, pose variations, glasses and partially occluded faces are still demanding tasks.
The research is concerned with the face recognition of farm animals, especially horses, which differ in some areas to the recognition of human individuals. Challenges remain by the higher degrees of freedom in the positioning of the head and the inhomogeneities in coat color and structure. While noses, eyes, eye browns and mouth are siginificant features within the human face, they are less distinguish for farm animals.
