Project

Project code: 2812OE019
Contract period: 01.11.2012 - 31.10.2013
Budget: 39,370 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

In further investigations a significant influence of the primary purpose on longevity was observed. Husbandry and management has to be adapted specifically to support and optimise the decision of the farmer with regard to animal health, a prolific performance, animal welfare and economical traits. Within the project 'Development of preventive measures for the promotion of health and longevity in sheep on organic farms' (2808OE187) a management information system (MIS, http://sheep.tierzucht.uni-kiel.de) was generated, which improves the overview of the herd, the status of animal health and procedures in sheep husbandry. The MIS was developed for all primary purposes. Constitutive on specific biological conditions of the primary purposes the developed management-tool will be adapted respectively. Therefore, the management-tool will be separated into the primary purposes meat, dairy and landscape management to optimise management decisions. In the same time the implemented dictionary will be enlarged, heritable diseases will be included and a section of sheep husbandry and breeding will be implemented. Another focus of this project is to optimise management. Hence a mobile system will be developed for data collection in the stables. This software will be used with common systems. During the whole project the management information system will be supported. Additionally, options of a continuous establishment of the management information system after project period will be checked. The aim of the project is to development an easy and compact management information system which optimises the overview of the herd, the status of animal health and prolific performance for the primary purposes specifically. Therefore the MIS will improve animal health, animal welfare and profitability on ecological farms.
