Project code: 2808OE187
Contract period: 01.11.2009
- 31.05.2012
Budget: 90,669 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The object of this investigation is to analyse the animal health and longevity of sheep on organic farms in Northern Germany and to determine the effects of husbandry and management influences on animal health and longevity. The aims of these project are to record the animal health and longevity on different organic farms, the analysis of the risk factors on longevity and animal health and, in the end, the development of a management-tool. In addition to the available data from breeding organisations, comprehensive examinations on the farms will be performed in two periods, contributing to a sufficient data base for the further analysis of risk factors. Two thousand sheep serve will be sampled, including checklists on animal health issues, microbiological milk examination and parasitological analysis of faecal samples. The analysis provides a basis to develop a management-tool which supports and optimises the decision of the farmer with regard to animal health, animal welfare and economical traits.
