Investigations on the susceptibility of selected bird species and mammals for the HPAIV H5N1 isolated in Germany
Project
Project code: 2813100906
Contract period: 01.10.2006
- 30.09.2009
Budget: 1,002,601 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
In contrast to other influenza viruses, the HPAIV H5N1 which occurred in wild birds in Germany is characterised by an extremely high virulence in combination with a broad species tropism. It is not only able to infect a large variety of bird species and mammals, but also often induces clinical symptoms which must be considered as a distinct sign of virus excretion. In order to understand better the mechanisms of virus replication, cell tropism, virus excretion, incubation period, detailed experimental infection studies are necessary. With regard to farmed poultry, investigations are particularly carried out in chickens, domestic ducks, domestic geese and turkeys. Depending on their availability, infections in selected singing birds will be carried out. With regard to mammals, experimental infections will be carried out in selected animal species which are likely to be particularly relevant for virus spread or transmission to humans, among them cats and dogs.
