Collaborative project: Protection of competetitive ability for the german fishery through development from innovative and practicle PAL-units for minimizing the common porpoise bycatch – Subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2819100612
Contract period: 15.07.2012
- 14.01.2014
Budget: 185,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
"The new Porpoise-PAL (pat.) developed by F3: Maritime Technology UG (ltd.) generates life-like porpoise communication signals aimed at alerting the animals to dangers in their environ-ment. By stimulating echolocation and increasing the acoustic ""visibility"" of nets and obstacles, by-catch is to be reduced. Whereas porpoises avoid acoustic deterrents such as pingers, Porpoise-PAL leads only to a slight increase in the minimum distance of the animals to the acoustic stimulus. Furthermore, click activity towards PAL is twice as high as towards pingers. The Porpoise-PAL was independently tested between 2014 and 2016 by the Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries, Rostock, in commercial Danish and German gill net fisheries. During the tests conducted in the western Baltic Sea, the device led to a statistically significant reduction of harbour porpoise by-catch of over 70%. There was no effect on the catch of target species. Since spring 2017, the Baltic Sea Infocenter in Eckernförde is deploying 1,680 Porpoise-PAL in a validation and testing study together with fishers in Schleswig-Holstein."
