Serological investigations on the susceptibility of selected bird species and mammals in natural outbreak areas of the avian influenza H5N1 infection
Project
Project code: 2813100706
Contract period: 01.06.2006
- 31.05.2007
Budget: 106,547 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
At present, the infection of wild birds in Europe with the HPAIV H5N1 offers the extraordinary possibility to investigate the susceptibility to and the spread of the pathogen among the different bird and mammal species in the natural outbreak areas by targeted serological field studies. In addition to the investigation of different wild bird and waterfowl species for the presence of antibodies against the HPAIV H5N1, mammals will be analysed. H5N1 specific antibodies will be detected species-independent by competitive ELISA. These results will provide insights into possible transmission routes which are important for the spread of the infection. They will also provide important information for assessing the risk of an exposition or of transmission of the virus from different animal species to humans.
