Monitoring with indicator animals in regions with a high water bird density
Project
Project code: FLI-IVD-08-231
Contract period: 01.08.2006
- 31.07.2009
Purpose of research: Basic research
In areas where many wild water birds gather during spring and even more during fall migration indicator facilities will be established. The facilities must permit contact of the indicator animals with wild birds. As indicator animals, docile mallard ducks or mute swans (truncated wings) from bird nurseries will be used, which will be sampled at regular intervals (swab and blood sampling). The animals will be fed, observed outdoors under controlled conditions (large enclosures which provide access for wild birds) and the presence of wild water birds in the vicinity will be protocolled regularly (number and exact species). If possible, wild water birds in the vicinity of the facility will be caught and enringed or checked for rings to obtain information on their origin.
