Development of a subunit and inactivated whole virus vaccine for immunisation of cats against an influenza H5N1 infection

Project

Project code: 2813100606
Contract period: 01.11.2006 - 31.10.2007
Budget: 187,241 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Cats can be infected with HPAI H5N1 Asia. Due to the unpredictable spread of the virus in Europe and the unpredictable duration of a potential exposition to the virus by the wild bird population, the development of vaccines for cats is an option. In addition to protecting the cats, the vaccine is especially useful for minimising the potential risk of transmission of the virus from cats to humans. In a pilot study we plan to investigate the principal possibility of immunising cats against an H5N1 infection. For this purpose, we will produce two vaccines and test their efficacy. As basis for the H5N1 whole virus vaccine and of the H5N1 subunit vaccine we will use the highly pathogenic avian H5N1 virus isolated from a cat. After double immunisation at an interval of three weeks, the efficacy of the vaccination will be tested by challenge infection of the animals with the highly pathogenic avian H5N1 virus. In addition to the immune response and to the clinical symptoms, the virus excretion as well as transmission to uninfected cats will be assessed.
