WASCAL (West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use). Work Package 2.6 Status of biodiversity as Indicator for Ecosystem Resilience in West Africa

Project

Project code: keine Angabe
Contract period: 01.10.2012 - 30.04.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research

This WP aims to evaluate spatially explicit the status of biodiversity at landscape level and use this as an indicator for ecosystem resilience in West Africa. The spatial distribution of plant species richness as a proxy for biodiversity is statistically modelled applying different modeling approaches based on species distribution data. Moreover, the actual status of habitats and their potential threat is analysed by help of land cover and vegetation type classifications derived from remote sensing datasets. In this context, criteria for habitat degradation and vulnerability will be analysed, such as habitat geometry like patchiness and fragmentation, but also degree of conversion and pressure by alternative land use options. Moreover, the relationship between the species richness, habitat status and potential for biodiversity-related ecosystem service provision will be incorporated based on empirical findings. The achieved results will be used for the integrated assessment and land use impact modeling in RC six as biodiversity-related indicator in order to facilitate the identification of scale-crossing linkages between the ecological and the social system and to test the SES resilience under different development scenarios and under climate change projections.
