Optimizing Baculovirus Production and Application for Cutworm Control
Project
Project code: JKI-BI-08-1199
Contract period: 01.08.2012
- 31.12.2015
Purpose of research: Basic research
A novel and effective biological control of cutworms, serious insect pests of agricultural crops, will be developed on the basis of highly selective baculoviruses. This will be achieved by molecular selection of virus strains, optimization of the production system and field testing.
Within the EU programme 'Eurostars' a cooperation project with Andermatt Biocontrol was carried out. The aim was research towards the optimization of the production and application of baculovirses for the control of Agrotis specis (cutworms). The project aimed to evaluate environmentally friendly alternatives for a sustainable control of these pests in agriculture and horticulture. The work programme at JKI foccused on virological and molecular questions, including the development of methods for the molecular identification and quantitation of Agrotis baculoviruses, genome sequencing, invewstigations of the virus stability.
