State of knowledge and deduction of research needs for the sustainable production and utilization of faba bean and pea

Project

Project code: 2812NA118
Contract period: 08.04.2013 - 15.06.2013
Budget: 4,000 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The study is based on the evaluation of numerous research projects in Germany that were funded in the past by different institutions. The cultivation of beans and peas is a result of its many positive achievements in agricultural ecosystems, largely due to sustainable agriculture. Positive benefits such as a high preceding crop effect, improving soil fertility, nutrient efficiency and the carbon and energy balance were identified. Further positive effects are the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the possibility for adapting to climate change and to increase biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. These effects occur solely at the site of cultivation and thus cannot be achieved by imports of legumes. According to the opinions of the authors, it is necessary that coherent research questions are picked up by a systemically designed research, so that legumes in future can develop a self-sustaining competitiveness in the market. Needed research of field beans and peas has been derived in the areas of cultivation, crop production, plant protection, animal nutrition, business management and food, non-food. Indications of specific research topics that depend on the crop type were also given. Thereby, a prioritization of the research content was carried out and highlighted their importance for the intensification of grain legumes cultivation. Particular need for research is seen in the breeding for improving yield height and stability as well as stem stability of peas. Open questions of diseases of legumes in close crop rotations as well as in N2 fixation by legumes must be addressed. Special attention in the field of plant protection should be made to the rust and aphids in faba bean, Bortrytis cinerea and stem base and root diseases in pea. In the development and approval of herbicides and fungicides further intensive research is required. For a successful presentation and evaluation of the economic viability of grain legumes in the crop rotation, the overall development of a computer-aided calculation model based on the rating scale 'DAL', taking the feed comparative value into account, is desirable. The necessary action was also derived for the areas of communication, knowledge transfer and advice and for policy. The establishment of pilot and demonstration projects in regional centers should be supported as a basis for the development of legume based value chains. With the gained knowledge in this study, future research projects should be initiated and better coordinated both by promoters and between research institutions.
