Contract period: 01.01.2012
- 31.12.2014
Budget: 119,840 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of this project is an objective comparison of two harvesting techniques for asparagus (Asparagus officinalis). Traditionally is the manual daily harvesting. A new development is the mechanical harvest method with time intervals of approximately seven days using a harvester (Kirpy-Spargelvollernter).
The achievable amounts of harvested asparagus of the two different harvesting methods have to be documented and evaluated. Several aspects are being tested. One aspect are the differences of the quality of asparagus stalks. The other part of the scientific research is to establish new ways of commercialization of short asparagus stalks, which are predominantly unavoidable when mechanically harvested. In conclusion, a general recommendation for the use of this new harvesting technique will be given.
