Project code: 2812NA121
Contract period: 01.01.2014 - 31.12.2018
Budget: 118,113 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The common vole (Microtus arvalis) can cause substantial damage to agriculture. Especially during mass eruptions, rodenticides are used in conventional farming. Basic approaches of non-chemical and preventive methods are available, but these techniques can presently not be used on a large-scale, are cost-intensive or time-consuming. In this project optimised approaches for managing rodent pest populations will be developed and tested with the target species in the field. The main technical aim is creating barrier effects between refuge areas and crops. For example deep furrows will be combined with repellents or traps to minimise invasion of fields by common voles in organic growing. If it is possible to achieve a large-scale protection, the significant common vole problems of mass eruptions may be diminished in organic farming and potentially in conventional framing. The latter might reduce the application of rodenticides minimising risks for non-target species.
