Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination

The general objective of the joint projects is a change from reactive hazard control and recondition of damages towards a risk culture in which natural hazards are seen as a standard framework of forest management. Risk management should become an integrated part of all working-procedures. Within this framework the projects aim to provide KNOWLEDGE, raise AWARENESS, moreover the establishment of a so called COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE is foreseen as a means to promote the cooperation of different forest institutions in Germany. The whole project is additionally seen as a pilot-project for a national activity that can assure that the work of an ‘European Forest Risk Facility’ (FRISK) will be transformed to information and manuals suited for practioners, in case that such a FRISK will be established after the ongoing pilot study. KNOWLEDGE • Actualization of existing information and elaboration of new subjects related to the topics climate change, adaptation and risk management • Procurement of more manuals for practical crisis management • Capacity building in the field of risk-management AWARENESS • Transculturation towards a permanent risk culture in forest management • Sensitizing of decision makers for the need of concrete steps in adaption • Disclosure of hindrances as a means to reduce their negative impacts COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE • Establishment of a Community of Practice in the field of climate change, adaptation and risk management • Use of concepts of social learning as a tool to enhance the willingness to take actions • Use of CoP members as multipliers in case of natural hazards • Execution of training seminars • Participation in organization of CoP-meetings and training seminars for multipliers • Participation in education of people in different forest education schemes • Consulting services for forest practitioners and forest owners • Realization of campaigns for awareness raising • Participation in campaigns using new media • Organization of national congresses and workshops • Consulting offers for political decision makers and senior managers of forest enterprises.
