Contract period: 15.10.2014
- 14.10.2017
Budget: 210,939 Euro
Purpose of research: Demonstration
With the adoption of the 'Eiweißpflanzenstrategie' (strategy for protein plants) in 2012 the BMELV started a national process to promote and support the production of domestic protein plants in Germany. Currently, the majority of protein plants produced worldwide is used for animal feed. To work towards a more sustainable protein feed supply constructive and solution-oriented cooperation with different supply chain stakeholders will be crucial. Therefore a dialog process with all stakeholders is important, as there is a common responsibility to act throughout the entire supply chain. Until now this responsibility has not been consistently taken on by supply chain stakeholders, rather it has been pushed down the line for others to deal with.
The objective of the project is to develop strategies and activities to ensure that more sustainable protein feed is used in Germany in the medium to long term. The process is to engage in dialog with all stakeholders of the supply chain. Together, stakeholders shall develop solutions and positions toward more sustainable protein feed in Germany including defining objectives and practical steps for implementing more sustainable protein feed in the supply chain. Domestic legumes will be considered as equivalent to other domestic protein plants (e.g. canola) and their use will be integrated into the strategy.
