The brewing and forage quality of winter barley may be strongly affected by a complex of various soil-borne viruses. The only way to combat the barley yellow mosaic disease complex is the development of varieties with sustainable resistance by pyramiding of efficient resistance genes against the complex of the predominant viruses. The first step to achieve this aim involves the analysis and the save diagnosis of this virus complex, as well as better estimation of its harmfulness on yield and upon technological quality of barley. The tools have to be developed for this will be subjected to an inter-laboratory test. This will be done on the basis of 60 samples per test (30 positive, 30 negative) whose results will be correlated with a visual bonitur of differential varieties and by ELISA tests carried out separately by a French laboratory (SNES) and by JKI. The following 3 viruses which should be considered are Barley yellow mosaic (BaYMV), Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) and the newly discovered Soil-borne barley mosaic virus (SBBMV). For this purpose, must be tested annually 12 to 15 differential varieties at 3 different locations in Germany. In addition, in the framework of the project samples collected from different regions in France should be sent to the JKI in order to be investigated for the occurrence of cereal viruses.

Different winter barley varieties and putative varieties were tested for potential resistance against Barley yellow mosaic (BaYMV), Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV) und das neu entdeckte Soil-borne barley mosaic virus (SBBMV). The field trials were placed at different German and French locations. Resistant material was identified and used for further breeding programmes.
