Collaborative project: Integrative approach towards enforced utilizsation of winter wheat genetic resources for grain yield improvement (GENDIV) - subproject 2
Project
Project code: 2814603713
Contract period: 03.09.2014
- 31.12.2017
Budget: 282,960 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The GENDIV project aims to utilize genetic diversity of wheat stored in Genebanks to make them available for pre-breeding programs of plant breeders. Therefore, during the first project stage, a panel of modern cultivars and accessions was characterized by phenotyping and genotyping. The data were used to (i) conduct population genetic studies and genome wide association studies and to (ii) identify private alleles associated with accessions and genomic regions under selection. A new approach was implemented to detect large chromosomal modifications. During the second project stage, again, a panel of accessions was specifically selected from the genebank in Gatersleben. Furthermore, a new approach was developed, which allows plant breeders to select suitable parent plants for crosses with elite breeding material out of the genebank. Modern cultivars were crossed with selected accessions to produce DH lines. DH lines showing a good suitability were transferred to breeding programs.
