Project code: 28RF372039
Contract period: 05.11.2014 - 30.06.2018
Budget: 330,174 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The main objective of project pigFit is the improvement of survival and immuno-competence of piglets and growing pigs. In order to realize these aims, the project is divided into three subprojects: 1) Evaluation of genomic methods to improve individual birth weight and survival of piglets. 2) Genetic improvement of piglet vitality and survival as well as growth potential of growing pigs using immuno-profiling and genomic selection. 3) Verification of previously identified genomic regions and corresponding biological pathways which are involved in the regulation of piglet survival and immuno-response. Activities are scheduled as follows: 1) Quantitative analysis of historical data comprising birth weight and piglet survival of two maternal pig populations. 2) Recording of birth weight, immune parameters and survival along with corresponding genomic SNP-information of 1400 piglets together with their dams. 3) Genetic statistical analysis (genomwide association study, genomic selection) of recorded phenotype and genotype information. 4) Exact experiment with 24 litters from extreme matings in order to verify and validate previously identified genomic regions and pathway, which are relevant for immune response and piglet survival. 5) Next generation sequencing of discordant full sibs in order to validate and verify biological pathways relevant for immuno-competence.
