Collaborative project: Breeding of pear cultivars and rootstocks with resistance against pear decline - subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2814IP009
Contract period: 01.03.2015
- 30.04.2018
Budget: 223,149 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Pear decline (PD) caused by Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri threatens pear growing in Germany. In the preceding project BiSo, it was the aim to select PD-resistant cultivars. By using the plant material available from the breeding programme at Bayerisches Obstzentrum an efficient selection methodology has been established. However, the development of this selection system took much time and an application for selection of resistant plants from the breeding programme was not yet possible within the time frame. This aspect which is relevant for the transfer to practical breeding will be treated in the project 'BiReVall'. Besides cultivar breeding, BayOZ is also developing rootstocks for pears with special characters such as dwarfing, winter frost hardiness and overcoming iron deficiency. Preliminary studies revealed promising rootstocks which combine these properties and, additionally, are highly tolerant or resistant against pear decline. This has to be ensured in the project BiReVall. Progress in containment of pear decline is expected for both the fruit bearing cultivars and the rootstocks.
