Collaborative project: Advancement of a branded meat program towards enhanced husbandry standards, taking into account economic and social aspects - subproject 5 (MarkiT)
Project
Project code: 28RZ372079
Contract period: 12.12.2014
- 31.01.2018
Budget: 152,854 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of this interdisciplinary project is the fundamental improvement of a meat brand to include animal welfare related requirements beyond legal demands. In a multistage-process, measures and criteria for increased animal welfare are defined which shall be included into the programs’ production guidelines. Based on surveys among farmers and consumers, as well as animal health assessments and latest insights from change management research, concepts for advisory services, auditing, and contracting are developed, which contribute to ease the implementation at farm level and ensure acceptance of the program along the chain. The developed concepts are open to other transformation processes in the food industry after conclusion of the project. The project starts with the pre-selection of a set of animal welfare related criteria which shall included in the production guidelines of the meat brand. All partners participate in this interdisciplinary process. The evaluation and definition of the final production guidelines spans the full duration of the project. During the project, findings from surveys among farmers and consumers concerning willingness to change and invest, or willingness to buy and to pay, respectively, will feed into the decision process. The development of new communication processes enables the introduction of the new production guidelines on pilot farms, by means of a comprehensive advisory and change management process. This allows partners to evaluate the costs as well as the animal health-related effects at the slaughterhouse level. To ensure the enforcement of the guidelines, it will be examined how the existing monitoring system and consulting services can be expanded and how costs and benefits of the program can be fairly distributed along the chain. Proposals for contractual arrangements are set out which take into account contributions and benefits of each party involved.
