Project
Project code: 2817200913
Contract period: 01.04.2015
- 31.05.2018
Budget: 287,700 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Animal welfare is a complex and multidimensional concept. Accordingly, the measurement of animal welfare includes a multiple set of indicator variables corresponding to different dimensions of animal welfare that need to be aggregated at different levels to achieve a common evaluation scale. At methodological level, this aggregation has not yet been soved effectively for existing evaluation systems. In particualr, at present no tool-kit exists that allows a multi-stage aggregation of elemtary indicator variables to an overall scale measuring total animal welfare. Accordingsly, the main aim of the project is to develop a flexible tool-kit that allows a consistent aggregation of a set of multiple indicator variables into an overall scale. The projcet contains two work packages. The first package identifies the preferences and political beliefs of the stakeholders concerning different dimensions of animal welfare using online-choice experiments. The beliefs estimated provide the information needed for the aggregation of welfare measures in the second work package. Multi-criteria analysis is used to aggregate the welfare measures from different dimension into an overall score. Finally a user-friendly tool-kit (AniFair) is developed that allows the user a fexible and comprehensible aggregation of different measures to an overall welfare score.
