Purpose of research: Applied research

The research objective is to provide a contribution to close knowledge gaps in the cultivation of soybeans with respect to preceding crop effects, nitrogen-fixation and the minimization of the risk of erosion through conservation tillage. The evaluation of these questions will improve the accuracy of the economical assessment of soybean cultivation. Hence, the project contributes to the optimization process of the cultivation and the competitiveness of GMO-free soybean production. In addition, the project conduces to promote the expansion of soy cultivation in Germany in conventional and organic farming. For the determination of the preceding crop effect and the nitrogen fixation of soybeans and their competitive crops, two field experiments (conventional and organic farming system) at three sites will be conducted for three years. The experimental results will be used to deduct guidelines for soybean cultivation. The second focus is to develop techniques for reduced soil tillage adapted to farming practice for a sustainable cultivation of soy with conventional methods on locations that are vulnerable for erosion. Different cultivation techniques will be evaluated on erosion-prone locations through field and On-Farm experiments. The experimental results can be used to exactly assess the monetary value of the nitrogen fixation, of the preceding crop effect and of the reduced soil tillage. In addition, the relative excellence of soybean cultivation compared to other important agricultural cash crops in conventional and organic cultivation will be assessed and classified. The results of this project and the derived guidelines will be made accessible through publications as well as in form of a booklet for farmers and consultants. Furthermore, presentations and lectures will be offered, e.g. at meetings of the soybean network. A final conference concludes the set of measures.
