Project code: 28RZ372030
Contract period: 26.05.2015 - 31.05.2018
Budget: 428,290 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

The research project REDUCE will promote the processing of a practical solution to reduce ammonia emission from cattle husbandry with a well controllable and proven innovative measure (urease inhibitor application) which will be ready for the market. In addition to the ammonia mitigation the urease inhibitor application will reduce the exposure of animals to ammonia, increase indoor air quality and improve animal health. Cattle slurry with additional remaining nitrogen content will increase their nutrient value and transport efficiency. REDUCE will enhance the completion of both cattle production in Germany and the involved industry partner. Furthermore options for action for environmental and agricultural policy can be derived from the results obtained by REDUCE. REDUCE will provide a systematic approach starting with the synthesis/process development, up to a quantitative verification of ammonia reduction efficiency and ending on the slurry management. The corresponding work packages or milestones are: optimization of urease inhibitor synthesis; development of a ready to market inhibitor solution; development and test of a practicable application technique; emission measurements under laboratory conditions and under practical conditions in two natural ventilated dairy barns to test inhibitor effectiveness; tests of stability and duration of inhibitor effect in interaction with slurry or slurry storage; tests on the influence on biogas production form slurry-inhibitor-mixtures; creation of process design of potential production procedure; creating the essentials of admission procedure for urease inhibitor. Six project meetings will guaranty the continuous exchange between all project partners and the project management of the funding organization.
