Production processes

Project code: 2814NA008
Contract period: 15.01.2015 - 31.03.2018
Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination

In the knowledge transfer project, practitioners were asked not only about their research needs in the context of the nationwide knowledge transfer events, but also about the need for innovation and market potential. The initial evaluation of this data paints a multi-layered picture of a creative practice in the organic sector driven by the possibilities of strong market demand, new participation and networking models and the expansion of (new) value chains and marketing channels. The results illustrate how broadly the definition of innovation must be considered in order to be relevant. On the one hand, there is the need for innovation through organic research. On the other hand, an intensive exchange of knowledge and good information opportunities is required for a successful development and innovation process. Reliable framework conditions promote development processes, while differing interpretations of regulations and legal frameworks lead to uncertainty and constitute an obstacle to development. A further part of innovation are information, education and training content, which play a key role in overcoming obstacles to sustainable development.
Integrating all perspectives and using appropriate facets of innovations: This also applies to the further development of cooperation between research and practice for organic. Building on the project work in the area of research-related practice networks (see Final Report, Part 1), BÖLW has coordinated and organised the development of conceptual ideas for the concrete design and strengthening of practice-inclusive research in Germany. With the participation of numerous scientists, practitioners and farm extension workers tasks and development approaches for the strengthening of networks and further development in the field of education and training as well as for strengthening the participation of all stakeholder groups were discussed and evolved in workshops. In the future, research funding can support thus approach through targeted funding of further networking spaces and the realisation of corresponding concepts. The recognition of communication achievements in transdisciplinary projects through the financing of coordinators, the adaptation of project durations as well as scope for flexibility in the procedural process are further starting points for the success of practice-focused research. In addition, application procedures should become more transparent for all parties involved, especially with regard to the time schedule in order to allow for better planning.
