Evaluation of methods for improving genetic diversity of alternative crops considering caraway (Carum carvi L.) as example
Project
Project code: BAZ-IGK-02-1172
Contract period: 01.01.2005
- 31.01.2007
Purpose of research: Basic research
Caraway is widely used in Central Europe due to its sensory characteristics and biological effects as spice and, in addition, as herbal remedy and for the production of a natural potato sprout inhibitor. Its cultivation as alternative crop contributes to sustainability by maintaining diversity of crops and by diversifying crop rotation. It provides the farmers with a market niche also in the domain of renewable primary products. It has been demonstrated in previous investigations in which way genetic diversity can be used for the selection of donors of valuable characteristics by evaluation. The aim of the project is henceforth the assessment of the suitability of methods for the generation of new genetic diversity and the accomplishment of new insights into the occurence of aspired characteristics of a species belonging to the group of alternative crops whereof only few results of corresponding investigations are available. The characterization of the genetic material includes the content of valuable constituents (essential oil and carvone) which have great importance for the product quality and for the reliability of olfactory and pharmaceutical effects. The attained insights will be used as parts of a strategy for sustainable agriculture by maintaining a broad crop species spectrum for different fields of use.
