Permanent crops and their cultivation suitability in Bavaria
Project
Project code: N/14/10
Contract period: 01.04.2014
- 31.12.2016
Purpose of research: Applied research
The cultivation of perennial energy plants is an ecological and labour efficient alternative to common annual crops. Perennial crops like Cup Plant, Sida, Tall Wheatgrass, Switch grass and Miscanthus have a high yield potential according to literature and the few trials that exist. But biomass production depends a lot on the specific site conditions. The aim of this project is to evaluate the yield potential and suitability of several perennial crops for Bavarian sites with varying soils and climatic conditions. Besides, the potential methane yield and fuel properties will be determined. Trials concerning cultivation technique or weed control complement the investigations. Ecological aspects of perennial cropping will be evaluated as well as energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions.
