Crop rotations with crops requiring short growing periods
Project
Project code: N/14/09
Contract period: 01.04.2014
- 31.10.2017
Purpose of research: Applied research
After harvest of profitable winter crops used as biogas substrate like whole plant silage of cereals or fodder mixtures like clover grass there is a gap until the next main crop. Gainful crops like maize and sorghum do not exhaust their potential when sown after middle of June due to their insufficient silage maturity. But this gap could be filled by species having a faster growth. Central requirements are a short vegetation time and a high drought resistance. Thus the main aim of the project is to find suitable late second crops for the given vegetation time.
Consequently selected summer crops like quinoa, lopsided oat, buckwheat, triticale-legume-mixture and false flax shall be investigated for their suitability to cultivate them as late second crops after whole plant silage of cereals.
