Suitability of buckwheat and quinoa as late catch crops for biogas production

Project

Project code: 22012910
Contract period: 01.04.2011 - 31.03.2014
Budget: 277,434 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The project aims to evaluate valid data concerning the suitability of buckwheat and quinoa as late catch crops for biogas production after harvest of whole crop cereal. Alternative cropping systems with these plants shall increase both land productivity as well as biodiversity in the agricultural landscape to promote sustainable energy crop production. Results shall be transferred in expert advice and site-adapted variety recommendations for growers. Buckwheat and quinoa are promising crops for late cultivation as both have a very short development time from sowing to harvest. Especially buckwheat offers long lasting flowering that is beneficial for insects feeding on nectar or pollen.
