Joint project: oil plants as intercrops. Subproject 3: Maximizing field emergence of sowing of pennycress-seeds for a inter crop

Project

Project code: 22015813
Contract period: 01.07.2015 - 30.06.2017
Budget: 60,934 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

The global demand for plant oil is increased by population growth and feedstock demand from the biofuel sector and other industries. It is a key challenge to produce additional plant oil volumes in a sustainable way and without any negative impact on ecosystems. One approach could be double-cropping systems based on short seasoned oil crops. Such systems allow for a feedstock production without land use change. In Germany, double-cropping is possible after barley harvest in June or July. Camelina (Camelina sativa) and Field Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) are potential crops for such systems. The objective of this joint research project is to optimise and introduce double-cropping systems with these crops. In field trials international camelina and pennycress varieties will be tested to identify those with the shortest growing period. Moreover, seed priming techniques as well as cultivation techniques for double-cropping systems will be optimized. Market research will help to identify lead buyers for all products and hence allow for contract farming.
