Studies on hormesis in plants caused by herbicidal compounds - mechanisms and practical consequences
Project
Project code: DFG
Contract period: 01.07.2014
- 30.06.2017
Budget: 395,855 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research
Low dose stimulations by toxicants have long been observed, but as most reports on hormesis come from studies designed to investigate other objectives, our understanding of this phenomenon is still limited. This is especially the case for effects of herbicides or other phytotoxins on plants. However, since herbicidal compounds are among the chemicals deliberately spread into the environment in large quantities, understanding how low doses affect plants and assessing the implications of herbicide hormesis in agriculture is of utmost importance. Therefore, the main objective of this proposal is to advance the knowledge on phytotoxin-induced plant hormesis regarding various fundamental aspects. As plants in a natural setting are generally exposed to several stressors, the questions of how hormesis is affected in chemical mixtures and by environmental conditions represents one of the key objectives. Another is the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying hormesis. The question of practical implications of phytotoxin-induced hormesis in agriculture will complete the approach. Results obtained will be rewarding for agronomists, environmentalist, toxicologists, and plant physiologists.
