Oats as rice of the north
Project
Project code: 2814OE013
Contract period: 01.03.2016
- 28.02.2017
Budget: 61,200 Euro
Purpose of research: Basic research
A range of one hundred varieties, breeding lines and genetic resources of naked oat will be evaluated under organic field conditions and tested for their suitability to be processed in a new hydro-thermic treatment at laboratory scale. The research focusses on the amount of marketable yield in dependence of the variety characteristics like kernel size and sorting, starch viscosity, colour after the pulping process, suitability for polishing and last but not least the crop yield. The findings will then be provided to grain-processing companies in order to facilitate the implementation of 'oat for cooking' as a new trade product, addressing customers with a high consciousness for nutrition and a preference for gluten-free products.
