Purpose of research: Applied research
The demonstration network aimed at expanding and improving the cultivation and the utilization of peas and beans used as animal feed or for human consumption in Germany. The main focus of the project was on knowledge transfer activities between research institutions, extension services, farmers and other key actors involved in legume value chains. Therefore, a network with 75 organic or conventional farms that were experienced in pea and/or bean cultivation was established. These so-called demonstration farms were located in ten federal states in Germany. The involved farms demonstrated cultivation practices based on current scientific knowledge or possibilities to use faba beans or peas in animal diets. They further provided agronomic and economic data on legume cultivation and utilization. These data allowed assessing economic legume profitability and ecosystem services. Besides, in collaboration with another research project, these data were used to identify agronomic key factors influencing pea and bean yield and grain quality. In order to improve utilization, particularly with regard to external and alternative marketing options, existing value chains for peas and beans were identified or further developed. In addition, new exemplary value chains were established. Of additional concern has been to assist inexperienced farmers in legume cultivation and utilization. The Regional Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture Saxony-Anhalt was one of the 16 consortium partners in the demonstration network during the first project period from 2016 to 2018 and was responsible for the supervision of the activities on the six demonstration farms, for the support of farms without experience in legume cultivation as well as for the identification and development of legume value chains in Saxony-Anhalt.
