Investigation of suitable indicators for the evaluation of hygiene and quality of colostrum as food
Project
Project code: MRI-MF-08-153-1050 Kolostrum
Contract period: 01.07.2016
- 30.06.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research
Colostrum for human consumption is mainly marketed as liquid extracts or as freeze-dried powder. Routine methods for the evaluation of the hygienic quality can not be applied because of major deviations in the composition of colostrum compared to milk. On European level no thresholds have been set so far due to missing data. Methods for confirmation of heat treatment are not yet available. Quality parameters for colostrum products have not been defined. Therefore the study will focus on different aspects: - Activity of different enzymes in bovine colostrum and inactivation rates due to heat treatment - Total bacterial counts in colostrum and suitable methods for rapid evaluation - Detection of antibiotic residues in colostrum - Cconcentration of immunoglobulins in dependence on udder health status - Excretion of residues of teat sealers used for drying off as alternatives for long-acting antibiotics
