Early indicators of the onset of tail-biting in pigs
Project
Project code: 2817902315
Contract period: 01.09.2016
- 31.08.2019
Budget: 100,564 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The aim of the present project was the development of early warning indicators to predict tail biting in pigs. Indicators are to be easy to collect, objective and have potential to be measured automatically. Animal related parameters tail posture and usage of enrichment material can be recommended as indicators to detect tail biting. Additionally, by monitoring the usage of enrichment material offenders for tail biting can be identified. This enables famers to take targeted measures. Automatic analysis of video material regarding activity behaviour was not specific enough to detect tail biting. The targeted monitoring of tail oriented behaviour seems necessary. Overall, the results contribute significantly to an early detection of tail biting and to future-oriented housing systems of undocked pigs regarding animal health and welfare.
