Collaborative project: Breeding of low allergenic apple cultivars via Mal d 1-ELISA-selection as a multidisciplinary developmental approach - subproject 1
Project
Project code: 2814IP018
Contract period: 01.08.2016
- 31.07.2019
Budget: 119,664 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
The project was carried out by the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück, the TU Munich and the Züchtungsinitiative Niederelbe (ZIN) in cooperation with the Comprehensive Allergy Center Charité and the European Centre for Allergy Research Foundation (ECARF). The aim was to select low-allergen apple cultivars in the ZIN breeding program in order to obtain the ECARF Seal “allergy-friendly” for at least one of them. For this purpose, an ELISA for the quantification of Mal d 1 in apples was developed and the Mal d 1 content of over 600 ZIN clones was determined. In addition, the polyphenol composition and the isoform spectrum were investigated. Selected low-allergen cultivars were allergologically evaluated by means of oral provocation tests with apple allergic patients for several years. Some ZIN-cultivars were better tolerated than the variety 'Santana', which is considered allergy-friendly. In the end, two cultivars of the ZIN breeding programme were awarded the ECARF Seal. Plant variety protection has been or is being applied for. After propagation of the trees, the first significant quantities of apples will be available on the market in 2025/26.
