Project code: JKI-A-08-1231
Contract period: 01.01.2015 - 31.12.2018
Purpose of research: Applied research

Due to the young biological development stage of reclaimed soils a latent infection of sugar beet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii) can build up severe infestation within a short period of time. The high reproduction potential occurs as a consequence of the absence of antagonists in theses soils. According to present knowledge population density increases with soil depth in correlation with decreasing soil bulk densities which is unique in comparison to natural soils. Knowing the quantitative potential of the vertical translocation of nematodes over the soil profile is crucial for the interpretation of multiplication rates of population densities which are commonly being detected in parts of the top soil. Clarifying the function of deep occurring nematodes as reservoir for population densities in the top soil would further help to understand the extreme population dynamics in the top soil of reclaimed fields. The increasing importance of winter oilseed rape and the extensive use of tolerant sugar beet cultivar will change the established rotation systems. Both crops tend to be cultivated closer within the rotation leading to a higher risk of increasing H. schachtii densities. The effect of novel intercrops in mixed stands on beet cyst nematodes is unknown. A reduction of nematodes populations up to deeper soil layers by an improved intercrop management is a goal.
