Project code: JKI-AG-08-1162
Contract period: 01.01.2017 - 31.12.2019
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Cut greenery is currently imported in great quantity from diverse third countries to Germany and EU and is not subject to any plant health regulation. As in all other plant material, endophytic fungi may be associated with cut greenery and transported into destination countries. Considering that the host plant-fungi relationship is strongly influenced by abiotic conditions and many environmental changes, these endophytic fungi may consequently turn out to be pathogenic. Generally, plant pathogen fungi are hardly detected during visual inspection. Possible explanation is the laborious identification of symptoms caused by fungi. Moreover, fungi often occur as latent or endophyte and some endophytes are latent pathogens. This project is aiming at determining the extent to which the import of cut greenery with no obligation of plant health inspection may contribute to the introduction of potential fungal harmful organisms. Based on recorded fungi, a risk assessment will be conducted and the necessary plant health measures evaluated.
