Establishment of a propagation system for ecologically produced strawberry plants related to a joint project, which has as its main focus the development of an ecologic mother plant maintenance for strawberries
Project
Project code: 2815OE059
Contract period: 08.02.2017
- 31.01.2020
Budget: 176,190 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The aim of the project is testing whether a mother plant maintenance under organic conditions in an insect-free polytunnel is possible and under which conditions. Starting with virus-free plant material, different substrates and fertilizers will be tested for their suitability. Super-elite-plants, produced during the project, can be delivered to smaller organically producing nurseries as starting material for future propagation. The project is part of two related research projects with the JKI Dresden-Pillitz, Institute for breeding research on fruit trees, which engage with the establishment of a production system for the production of organically produced strawberry plants. This project starts with virus-free plant material from the meristem reproduction. These plantlets will be planted in Köln-Auweiler in an insect-free polytunnel in organic substrate and afterwards organically cultivated (plant protection, fertilization, etc.). In total 100 plants of one cultivar will divided into four groups (two substrate and two fertilizer variations) of 25 plant per group. In the first year one, in the second year two cultivars will be tested. Everything related to the cultivation and any difficulties will be record to use this for consulting services and as scientific output. Young plants, which are available one year after planting, will be handed over to an organic farmer. All 300 plantlets from the meristem reproduction from both years will be cultivated throughout the whole project period to test, whether they can be cultivated for several years under organic conditions and supplied with all necessary nutrients. The young plants will be propagated on an organic farm and will be given as fresh plants or frigo-plants to the organic strawberry producers. This work will be documented as part of a subcontract.
