Purpose of research: Applied research

The issue of sustainability is becoming increasingly relevant to competitiveness. The German dairy industry has recognized that facts are required in order to present objective and clear images of German dairy production (transparency) on the one hand; facts are also required to kick off a step-by-step process towards more sustainability on the other. Against this background dairy industry and science together developed the “QM Dairy Sustainability Tool” (Thünen-Institut, Projektbüro Land und Markt, QM Milch e.V.). For three years, 34 dairies and over 8,000 dairy farmers nationwide tested the tool for practical suitability. On the basis of the collected data on more than 80 sustainability criteria in the areas of ecology, economy, social and animal welfare, the dairies and each individual dairy farmer receive feedback on the dairy farmers’ performance and potential for improvement with regard to sustainability. Many stakeholders recognize that the industry has embarked on a future-oriented sustainability path with this tool. The further developed module has been continued after the pilot phase, financed by the dairy industry.
