Collaborative project: New techniques of optical detection and residue-free control of stored product insect pests with laser beams. Subproject (Insektenlaser)
Project
Project code: 2814904215
Contract period: 01.09.2017
- 31.03.2021
Budget: 260,739 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
During storage and processing the immigration of stored product insects cannot always be completely avoided. The technology tested in this project consists of a mobile camera unit that is supposed to detect pest insects by frequently scanning the surfaces. Insects present will be determined to the species level by comparison to pictures present in the camera chip. Was determination successful to a certain level of probability control will be triggered using a laser beam and motor-driven flexible mirrors. The project will be consisting of two parts of identical length, 18 months each: The first part will determine if mobile camera units are able to scan surfaces and detect stored product pest individuals including species determination. The second part will be used to test the laser unit and its efficacy considering the safety of stored goods and the environment. The project is accompanied by industry partners. The surface tested is grain because it should be excluded that grains are damaged by energy beams. Utilization of this technology appears possible in all processing facilities for food, feed, medication or tobacco.
