Purpose of research: Applied research

Plasmodiophora brassicae is a soil-borne fungal pathogen causing severe damage of clubroot disease on oilseed rape. An increase in areas with oilseed rape cultivation and relatively short crop rotation cycles has intensified the importance of the disease not only in Germany but also in Europe. Areas with a high disease incidence together with favourable climatic conditions represent significant yield damage potential. Since there are no fungicides available until today breeding for resistance remains a major goal in minimizing the disease. It should be taken into account that genetic control of resistance in host plants can vary from pathotype-specific resistance to resistance against a broad spectrum of pathotypes. Wide differences in virulence and DNA polymorphism exist between field populations of P. brassicae. Therefore, in a breeding program for introgression of resistance, it is important to focus on resistance against specific pathotypes prevalent in the geographical region. Till date, new cultivars have been introduced with improved resistance to the disease, but sometimes this resistance can be overcome as new pathotype of the pathogen emerge. Therefore a monitoring of the clubroot distribution in German oilseed rape fields seems necessary and strategies to improve the durability of resistance in combination with other factors need to be developed and tested in the practice.
