Optimization of drainage ditch management to strengthen the natural retention of plant protection products

Project

Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1384
Contract period: 01.10.2017 - 31.08.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: water protection, degradation of plant protection products

Water protection measures such as buffer zones efficiently protect running waters from diffuse inputs of plant protection products (PPP) via surface runoff from agricultural areas, but they are not effective against inputs via tile drainage. Further mitigation measures to increase retention and degradation of PPP in agricultural drainage ditches are hence necessary to minimize these risks. However, there is still need for research on the enhancement of ditch efficiency to retain and degrade PPP that is consistent to the initial function of water clogging and erosion control in agricultural landscapes. The identification of mechanisms which determine PPP degradation and retention in drainage ditches is thereby fundamental for optimizing their retention potential. Therefore, the importance of biotic and abiotic stream components (sediment, macrophytes, biofilms) for PPP degradation and sorption is investigated and a concept for functional ditch management will be developed.
