Development of an effective method to monitor the acid-base status of dairy cows in the transit period
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-THÜ-2016-T03
Contract period: 01.01.2016
- 31.12.2018
Budget: 46,700 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: animal husbandry
Acid-base disorders are main precursors of multifactorial diseases in dairy cows, e.g. laminitis or metrits. Particularly, subclinical rumen acidosis, followed by chronic metabolic acidosis, is common in grain fed dairy cows and reduces feed intake and ruminal function. Urine net acid base excretion provides a clinically valuable insight into acid-base-balance and is more precise than routinely used fat-protein-ratio in milk.
