Due to climate change, traditional urban trees suffer increasingly from drought stress and subsequently from pests and diseases. In search of stress tolerant and climate proof urban trees, the Bavarian State Institute of Horticulture and Viticulture is testing 20 promising species in three different Bavarian cities under different climatic conditions to expand the presently scarce repertoire of urban tree species. The 460 trees are checked twice a year on frost and drought damage, crown vitality, pests and diseases. Shoot and girth development are measured each autumn.
