Purpose of research: Project preparation activity
Cereals are one of the most important products on international markets and the most important crop plants in the Ukraine. Upon the global climate change, both in the Ukraine and Germany cereal production is exposed to new hazards, e.g. altering weather conditions and different pathogen occurrence, posing high risk to yields level. The current agrotechnological practices will need to adopt to this development. Furthermore, the increasing requirement for new environmentally safe technologies reflects the paradigm of sustainable agriculture, in which active biological substances could replace the currently used products. An example of such a novel technology is the use of microorganisms. For example, the application of bacterial signaling molecules such as N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHL) to prime plants for enhanced resistance. The main goal of the current project is to investigate an original technology of cereal priming with AHL. Particularly, we will study how such priming effects the plant’s yield and the associated microbial community. Both will be thoroughly assessed by classical microbiological and modern molecular methods. The productivity of several varieties of Ukrainian wheat and German barley, will be analyzed in parallel with the detailed investigation of the rhizosphere microbial communities throughout a complete production cycle in field conditions. The objectives of the Enhanced_Cereal project are to strengthen the existing professional contacts between the Ukrainian and German groups and to establish a broad collaboration. This will include organization of workshops focused on AHL-impact on cereals hosted at the JKI in Braunschweig and the preparation of a project draft for international proposal for the upcoming EU Framework Program
