Collaborative Project: The use of Trichogramma ichneumon fly against the codling moth Cydia pomonella L. - Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2814202306
Contract period: 01.07.2007 - 31.05.2010
Budget: 155,280 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

It was the main objective of the project to optimize the utilization of Trichogramma-wasps to control the late oviposition by the Codling moth in apple orchards. Thererfore more effective Trichogramma-species have been selected and a machine based spraying application method for Trichogramma has been developed. The species T. evanescens has been found in apple orchards. It was detecting baiting fruits with natural oviposition of the Codling Moth much better than the species T. cacoeciae that has been used in the past. For spraying the usual machinery has been used, the nozzles had been removed. Also different new release schemes at a lower dosage have been tested for the Trichogramma-cards. T. evanescens showed a good dispersal released on cards comparable to the spraying results. Due to different practice aspects like easy hanging of a few cards or better dispersal by spraying it is possible to make a decision between the card system and the spraying technique from case to case.
