Collaborative Project: Development, characterization and breeding of parsley-lines (Petroselinum crispum) with resistance to the agent of Septoria leaf blotch (Septoria petroselini) – Subproject 1

Project

Project code: 2814102406
Contract period: 01.05.2007 - 15.06.2010
Budget: 76,626 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) is the most important aromatic plant in German field production. Up to now growing requires application of fungicides because of the high infection pressure by Septoria petroselini in specialised farm areas. The necessary crossing method for the transmission of Septoria resistance from gene bank accessions was developed successfully. The F1 progenies have high levels of resistance similar to resistant standard. Inbreeding depression in parsley was determined for the first time with 27 to 53 % for fresh mass of I3 lines in comparison with the respective initial population. F1 bastards of the combination resistant I2 line x high yielding variety were back crossed to the high yielding variety. Single plants with high level of resistance similar to resistant lines were selected from the BC1 progenies. The breeding activities are focused on flat-leaved parsley with organoleptic quality of variety 'Gigante d'Italia'. The breeding activities necessary up to registration of the first Septoria resistant variety will be continued by the project partner N.L. Chrestensen.
