Collaborative project: Characterization of resistance donors against soil-borne cereal mosaic virus (SBCMV) and wheat spindle streak mosaic virus (WSSMV) in genetic resources of rye and their use for breeding of virus resistant cultivars - Subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2814302007
Contract period: 16.11.2007 - 15.06.2011
Budget: 212,682 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Segregatin populations were created from preselected breeding material and three mapping populations were tested for resistance to SBCMV and WSSMV. Resistant and tolerant lines were selected in all populations. The frequency distributions indicated an oligo- or polygenic inherited resistance. The selected lines are suitable for development of virus resistant rye cultivars. Genetic sources were evaluated for resistance to soil-borne viruses. New resistance donors were detected in the Anatolian rye gene pool. Full sibling progenies with increased resistance level were developed as a result of selective breeding by controlled pollination of heterozygous parents. Pathogen populations from different infested regions were characterized concerning their aggressiveness on rye. Molecular linkage maps for the three mapping populations in generations F3 and F5 with different resistance donors were generated. For almost all combinations (population, generation, virus) QTL could be detected.
