Over the last 50 years, the Draize rabbit eye irritation test has been used in regulatory safety testing. Despite the ethical considerations related to animal experimentation in general, this test has often been criticised for its lack of objectivity, repeatability and for over-predicting human responses. Although research on alternative methods is now widely perceived to be beneficial both for animal welfare as well as for scientific and economic reasons, attempts to validate alternative methods for the replacement of the Draize test have been unsuccessful so far. Several recommendations have been made as to which requirements such alternative test systems have to meet: While cytotoxicity assays should show a mechanistic correlation to the in vivo animal eye test, additionally, organotypic models should be used since they are expected to provide further advantages for eye irritation testing. ; ; As a result of former studies performed at the University of Bremen, a human cornea equivale
